Although Riverside has revamped its annual Fourth of July parade throughout the village, the post-parade celebration in Guthrie Park has been cancelled. As an alternative, American Legion Post #0488 has recruited world-renowned Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt interpreter Joe Wiegand to virtually deliver the famous Citizenship in a Republic speech made by Roosevelt in 1910 France. The speech birthed the notable “Man in the Arena” passage, often repeated during historical times of stress, encouraging people to be courageous and tenacious instead of merely a spectator.
The speech will be broadcasted live via Zoom at 4:00 p.m. CST on July 4. The event is free, open to the public, and no pre-registration is required.

All we ask is that you show up ready to learn and witness the reprisal of a historical event. Young people are encouraged to attend and learn more about the former president. A short Q&A will be conducted at the end of the event.
This event piggybacks on the success of Post #488’s virtual Memorial Day event, hosting George Buss as President Abraham Lincoln, conducting Lincoln’s second inaugural address. The event was attended by over 50 families and was well received by the attendees and the press. More event information can be found on Post #488’s Facebook @americanlegionriverside or on their website: www.americanlegionpost488.weebly.com.
